Charbono: 2002 Vintage

(pronounced:  "shar-BO-no")

Tasting Notes

Very deep purple, amazing aromas, ripe extraction yet this variety also retains healthy acidity. No wonder they can bottle-age for 30 years. Have fun with this wine!

The last report I heard, there are only about 40 acres of Charbono in California, Gary Heitz being my fruit source in Calistoga.

In 1969, when I was in high school, our good friend and neighbor, Bill Miller took me to Inglenook, a company that he worked for, and he let me taste the 1968 Inglenook Charbono out of the cask. Pivotal moment! I was so overwhelmed by the intensity and character of that wine, I decided then and there to become a winemaker. Bill steered me toward the Davis programs and off I went.

So, I would like to dedicate this inaugural Foley Charbono vintage to Bill Miller for his important contributions to my career. Three cheers to Bill Miller!

This Charbono, paired with Philippe Jeanty's Coq Au Vin,  and I am in heaven...
